This story on the BBC really alarmed me. Until I saw that article it never occured to me that we were so close to a society like that in Gattaca. I’ve grudingly accepted the CCTV and the DNA databases of *convicted* offenders, but now I feel it’s starting to go a little too far.
As a citizen of the UK, I’m already a member of the most watched population on earth. Last week the government along with PITO(I think) mentioned a national rollout of automatic number plate recognition. We already have one of the biggest databases of DNA in the world, now they are examining the idea of rolling that out to the entire populous.
At least the Human Genetics Commission have recognised the inherit moral and social issues. However they also mention the cost, and I have a feeling that is of more importance to those in power than the rights of the individual.
Baroness Helena Kennedy QC
“We have concluded that there are important ethical, legal and social barriers to genetic profiling of this kind, although there could be medical advantages in the future.
“It is important that research continues in order to establish how far profiling could be clinically useful, and it is critical that developments are kept under review.
“Specifically, we are recommending to government that the entire topic should be revisited in five years, when technologies will have moved on and the prospect of this becoming a reality is closer.”
One final thing, if you haven’t seen Gattaca go and watch it now. If you can watch it on DVD and have a look at the coda in the special features.
An article has appeared in the Tele about work. Click here for a read
Whilst the important people were being shown around the Tele photographer took the opportunity to take a lot of photos of me pretending to work, thankfully they didn’t use any of the shots. I say pretending to work because this is what I actually typed
//Lets pretend to type some stuff so the guy can take some pictures for whatever reason he wants
// Hopefully this can’t be read on the screen otherwise I’m a little scuppered
void cTrafficControlEdgeController::LetsAddSomeGubbins()const
{
// Again just some typing
for (Int32 i = 0; i != m_uiOutgoingLaneCount; ++i)
{
printf(“Hello World %d\n”, i);
printf(“Hello mum, I don’t like having my photo taken…”);
// Lets do some maths…
Int32 iSquared = (i * i);
// I wonder if this if for the courier… or the tele? I can’t remember what
// Colin said in his email earlier in the week. Mind you when does a week start,
// most people would say Monday, although traditionally is’t been on a Sunday.
// Hrmm I’m hungry I wish I could eat my Bannanananannana.. He really isn’t getting my best
// side… I really don’t think I’m that photogenic, but what the hell. I suppose I fit the description of
// typical geek.

I’m trying to get out and about a bit more, instead of spending most nights in the pub. So tonight I’m off to see Ed Byrne at the Dundee Rep.
In a couple of weeks I’m off to go and see Beverley Knight at the Glasgow Academy. There looks like there may be a few other gigs that I want to go to… I’ll keep an eye out. The problem is either getting back to Dundee or finding somewhere to stay in Glasgow.
NARC is cheap as chips
Time to preorder then
Well it’s been a long time coming, and it certainly hasn’t had the easiest of births, but NARC is apparently now available from Midway.
It’s got an interesting price point of $19.99 which should hopefully build up some sales, although I’m a little suspicious that there haven’t been any reviews yet. Time will tell I guess. I’m not sure when the UK release is, but I’ll be sure to get a copy just to see how long the credits are
Went to the first TLUG meeting in ages on Monday. Had an interesting talk from cmb. Afterwards, the usual pub trip to Mickey Coyles.
Afterwards met Susan, Helen, Lorna, Doug and Greg, for a pint beforeheading home. Not been upto much else really… need to get out more
